Case Study
bCUBE+
Real-time PCR machine
The Hyris bCUBE+ is a compact and portable molecular diagnostics device designed to perform rapid genetic testing on-site. Weighing roughly 1 kg, it is a miniaturised machine able to amplify, detect and quantify DNA/RNA molecules.
When: 2023
Course: Politecnico di Milano, Final Master’s Degree Thesis Project

What is DNA amplification
The process is elegant and simple: heat a DNA molecule to separate the double helix into two strands, and use each strand as a template for making a copy, much like how DNA unspools and copies itself inside our cells.

Step 0
Sample collection
Step 1
Separate the DNA strands
Step 2
Target the area to be copied
Step 3
Extend the target area
Step 4
Repeat 30 times to get billions of copies

Endless applications possible
PCR is a rapidly evolving technology with an exceptionally broad range of applications, from healthcare and drug development to forensics, environmental analysis, and research. Its versatility makes it a critical tool across industries, with continuously expanding potential.

Identifying requirements
To kick off the design phase, I worked closely with the R&D team to analyse the product, its key features and defining requirements. We established a set of design guidelines aimed at driving improvements across all aspects of the product.

Cost optimization
Reduce components to simplify assembly/disassembly procedures.
Brand identity
Design language built for future products and Hyris brand values.
Performance
A faster PCR analysis whit multiple wavelengths detection.
User experience
Clear feedback on analysis and easy access to the reaction chamber.
Redesign a portable and fast PCR machine
with minimal custom components.
Thermal module
Allow 5°C/s heating and cooling ramps to enable fast and efficient PCR cycling.
Optical module
Detect multiple fluorophores, including FAM, HEX, VIC™, ROX, CY5™ and QUASAR™.
Direct feedback
The system must provide clear and immediate feedback on the current state of the analysis.
Assembly/disassembly efficiency by allowing quick access for cleaning and maintenance.
Minimal assembly

Form exploration driven by airflow
Form development was driven by the need to optimise air circulation for faster cooling. Different configurations and shapes were explored to maximise airflow while maintaining a compact footprint and directing hot air away from the user.

Premium laboratory aesthetics
The design is based on simple, solid volumes softened by continuous curvature, balancing precision with approachability. Materials, colours, and finishes are selected to express the brand’s core values: influential, magnetic, and direct.

Down to the smallest detail
Hyris stands for reliability and precision, where no detail is left to chance. Every element of the product is designed to communicate the brand’s values, translating care and accuracy into a tangible experience for the user.

Form follows function
The internal architecture is designed as a compact, integrated block that minimises space and unnecessary volumes. Every element is shaped by functional needs such as airflow and thermal management.

Sturdy, durable and highly reliable
The outer body serves as both structure and protection, designed as a seamless, single-piece CNC machined aluminium shell. This approach ensures maximum strength, durability, and long-term reliability.
Complexity made simple
The thermal and optical modules are highly complex assemblies with numerous components. Despite this, the system is designed to integrate them into a compact architecture maximising portability and durability.

Operational efficiency
bCUBE+ is designed for quick and intuitive disassembly, allowing operators to access internal components in just a few steps. This reduces downtime and simplifies cleaning, servicing, and part replacement.
